Privacy Policy

UnScreen collects information about the apps and sites you use, and sends that to the cloud. We strongly recommend reading this page diligently before installing.

We collect the following data:

• Your name and email address
• The names of the apps you use
• The domains (and subdomains) of the sites you visit (but not the full URL)
• Timestamps related to when you use the above apps and sites

That data is encrypted and sent to our servers. We use it to understand how you use your computer, to provide insights on how to reduce your distraction, and to make UnScreen's algorithms better.

Data is stored on Amazon AWS servers. We do not sell any data to third parties. Only a small subset of engineers and data scientists employed by UnScreen have access to AWS keys. (As of June 2026, the list of approved people is 1 person).

Data regarding personal identity can only be accessed by engineers and data scientists employed by UnScreen. In most instances, personal details are not accessed when examining activity logs.

Personally identifiable information is removed from all logs sent to our logging service, Better Stack, and our bug tracking service, Sentry.

Aggregated data not related to any individual user (e.g.: "the average user is 9.4% less distracted at 10am than 4pm") may be shared with accredited academic institutions and nonprofits for the purpose of improving online health and behaviors. That data may also be discussed and published by UnScreen. It does not allow for disclosure of any individual user's logged data or identity, or any behaviors or trends attributable to an individual user.

The desktop app you install sends through activity once every 5 minutes. In short: whenever the "tree" icon is present in your menu bar without a red dot in the middle, UnScreen is logging data.
